“Workforce diversity refers to policies and practises that seek to include people who may be considered to be different from those in the prevailing constituency.” (Rob McInnes, Diversity World, 2000)  Today’s labour pool is no longer dominated by a homogeneous group; many companies are concerned about employment discrimination and have non-discriminatory and equal opportunities (EEO) human resource policies. 

Employment discrimination has a negative impact on the workplace because people work best when they are valued and supported; the key to this in the modern environment is developing an understanding of diversity and difference.  This can be challenging, but is linked to both the organisation’s and individual’s values.  However the outcomes are worthwhile as diverse workforces have a competitive advantage and can capitalise on a wider range of talent, experience, knowledge and insight.
